What is the link between marijuana and schizophrenia?

Okay, I’m just thinking here. I know that a couple of my uncles have schizophrenia, and I know that they experimented with marijuana when they were younger. My mom told me a few months ago that I should NEVER try marijuana, because schizophrenia runs in our family, and that marijuana can bring it out from your genes. Is this true? What are the chances you will become schizophrenic if you smoke marijuana and it runs in your family? What about if it doesn’t run in your family? I’d like to know. =] Thanks in advance.

The link is very weak if it exists at all. Think of it this way…there are literally 1000′s of people in the world who have schizophrenia who have never done MJ. If MJ was such a strong predictor, how did all those people get the illness? There are many other stronger predictors of Schizophrenia. In any case, drugs are never good for you anyways. You will have the best chance at a normal life if you stay away from drugs and alcohol. Hope that helps.

Better than not. Marijuana can bring out these sorts of effects if it runs in your family. This is still all pretty new research, according to Wikipedia, but I wouldn’t mess with it. I don’t know about exact chances, but it’ll make you paranoid at the very least.

Wow holy crap, never thought about it before but I have a friend a brother and sister that have schizophrenia, and they used to smoke it a lot.
I tried it a few times, but I don’t think anything is wrong with us.. I mean me.

Kudos to Dr. Atari!
You should chosen for "Best Answer". I nearly fell off my chair when I read what you (or is it we) wrote… such humour is so rare!
Even though subjects are serious sometimes, we all need a good laugh. It really IS the best medicine.
(… still laughing)
