Planks: Strength for Abs and Lower Back
That plank exercises just work the abs is a common misconception – they actually do a lot more. When doing planks many of the muscles that connect your upper with your lower body are involved and because of this plank exercises not only do something for your abs, they also strengthen your lower back and help you keep a good posture. Both of these can alleviate back pain, as a correct posture and stronger muscles help your core and can take pressure off the spots that cause the pain.Got fitness questions? Can I get a six pack from doing these?
Evilcyber on May 9, 2010 at 1:51 pm
@720Wonder Do them along with crunches and bicycles, but remember that for the abs to be visible you need a low body fat percentage.
720Wonder on May 10, 2010 at 10:06 pm
Also, when I do planks, my shoulders start to hurt after like a minute. Can you offer some input about this?
ZanarSargamathA on May 23, 2010 at 6:22 am
@720Wonder i’ve been doing them since i saw evilcybers vid, but they prevent lower back pain, so no, do crunches, leg raises and bicycles along with them
720Wonder on May 23, 2010 at 2:52 pm
@ZanarSargamathA Thank you.

liljahn79 on June 20, 2010 at 11:30 pm
@Evilcyber and what’s the low body fat percent?
Evilcyber on June 21, 2010 at 3:12 pm
@ToasterGeek Beats me! Although that is kinda funny! :)
Evilcyber on June 21, 2010 at 3:13 pm
@Martin1983CSS Ich habe daran gedacht, aber glaube, daß es sich im Moment wohl nicht lohnen würde. Mal sehen, vielleicht wenn wir das Forum mal um einen deutschen Bereich erweitern :)
Evilcyber on June 21, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Evilcyber on June 21, 2010 at 3:14 pm

derbigpr500 on July 1, 2010 at 4:47 pm
Are side planks suppose to be much harder than regular ones or is it just me? I can hold a normal plank with proper form for more than 1 minute, but cant hold a side plank for 15 seconds.
StemNEItilEU on July 4, 2010 at 8:24 pm
I’ve had lower back pain for a while now, and I was kind of nervous if it was going to stay. I will try these exercises now, and see how it works out! Thanks Evil! ;)
Evilcyber on July 7, 2010 at 2:36 pm
@StemNEItilEU Hope it will help, Stern! All the best ! :)
Evilcyber on July 7, 2010 at 2:37 pm
@derbigpr500 They recruit different muscles, so those used for side planks might need a little more practice to catch up.
